Winter Lawn Care tips

If you’re anything like me during the winter you definitely don’t think about what to do with your lawn or your backyard. It’s an area that many of us don’t really think about when the colder weather comes, besides that my children love to go out and play. I learned that before the winter months come along, there are a few things you should do to make your backyard is ready for the cold front to come in. It’s important to keep these in mind to maintain your backyard, your lawn, and your overall appearance from winter to Spring. Below are a few tips!

  1. Store Cushions: I know many of us are guilty of not putting away our patio cushions especially when the weather turns from wonderful to worse. I recently learned that this is a huge thing to ensure that your cushions do not become useless because of the damp rain, ice, or any other issues that might happen due to the weather changing so frequently. Not only should you store any outdoor cushions that you have for safekeeping but you should also make sure to put away any rugs or furniture as well. This will help them look their best season after season. If you don’t have a shed to put them in, you can store them in your basement or cover them with an outdoor tarp.
  2. Stay On Top Of Your Tree and Lawn Care: Do you have any bushes that need some extra TLC? What about trees that have branches that need trimming> If you aren’t comfortable cutting these branches down yourself, hire a professional company to do it for you. As far as tree trimming goes, which can be a huge hazard, the team uses state of the art equipment and a professional eye for what needs to be done. The company also makes sure that the trees themselves stay healthy, safe, and attractive to your home. This is something you want to make sure you stay on top of.
  3. Keep it Clean: This might sound easier said than done but you’d be surprised how many people do not keep their lawn clean when the cold weather occurs. Keep leaves and debris off the lawn if you can because that only damages the grass. Not only that but damaging your grass then invites insects or mice who are attracted to that! If you have any toys that you keep outside, rotate them from season to season so you aren’t killing the grass underneath.
  4. Lower The Height Of Your Mower: I never thought about this before until my husband pointed it out, but it’s really helped keep our grass and backyard looking their best. I lower the height of the mower by a notch or two the very last couple of times he mows for the year. Excessively long grass can smother itself which then causes disease. This also can put it at risk for the winter months to damage from the freezing temperatures. Just be mindful when you decide when your last few times of mowing your lawn will be. This will help you when the warmer months occur and save you money if you need to replant certain patches.
I’m sure there are many more other great tips to help maintain the overall appearance of your backyard, starting with your lawn care, landscape, and working around to the surrounding trees or bushes you have. Do your best and ask questions to professionals who can assist you in making sure your lawn looks its best season after season. When looking to hire a professional company, ask your neighbors, friends, or family to give you quality recommendations, ask for quotes, and do your research to find a loyal and trustworthy company.
